Description

This machine started out its life in February 2010 as a FreeNAS box, built around an AMD X2 4200+ CPU, an Asrock 939A785GMH/128M motherboard and 4GB Hynix DDR400 memory.

In August 2010 the machine was reassembled as a workstation using a new motherboard (Asus M4A88TD-M EVO/USB3) and upgrade parts from serenity (including the AMD Phenom II X6 1090T BE).

In June 2013 the machine was upgraded to an Intel Core I7-4770K and a Asus Gryphon Z87 Motherboard. The old core was re-assembled in August 2013 in a new Cooler Master Elite 310 tower and then sold to a new owner (1090T / M4A88TD-M / 8 GB / HD5770 / Kingston 64 GB SSD / 1TB Seagate HDD / Card Reader / DVDRW).

In December 2013 the machine was converted to an all UEFI setup for Linux and Windows and a liquid cooler was installed.

In March 2014 the Apple SSD received from defiance was replaced with a Samsung 830 SSD received from the same machine.

In July 2016 the liquid cooler was removed again and the original Zalman CNPS 10X Extreme was re-installed.

In December 2017 the original 3x 1TB Western Digital Black HDDs (all manufactured in November 2009) were retired and replaced with a new 4TB Toshiba X300 Hard Drive and a 2TB Western Digital Green Hard Drive (re-activated from stock)

In October 2018 the Asus GTX 760 Graphics Card was replaced with an MSI GTX 1060 Graphics Card.

In December 2018 the computer was upgraded to an 6-core I5-8600K running with 32GB RAM on the Z370 platform, introducing ultra-fast storage in the form of 2x 1TB NVMe SSDs. Some replaced components were sold on eBay.

In September 2020 the computer received a facelift with the case being replaced with a more modern Be Quiet! Pure 600 Tower, Be Quiet! Shadow Rock Slim CPU Cooler, a new Corsair HX750 Power Supply to replace the now 10-year old Corsair HX450 Power Supply and one of the Crucial 1TB NVMe SSD's was moved to an external Icy Box USB-C Enclosure. Linux was moved to a new 500GB Samsung 970 EVO NVMe drive. The old Antec Mini P180 Tower, Corsair HX450 PSU, Zalman CNPS 10X Extreme Cooler and 3x 1TB Western Digital Black 3.5" drives (which were in storage since 2017) were donated.

In December 2021 the machine was upgraded with a 2.5GBase-T PCIe Network Adapter and in January 2022 the remaining 1TB Crucial NVMe SSD was moved to an external Icy Box USB-C Enclosure.

In April 2022 an additional Crucial MX500 2TB 2.5" SATA SSD was added to the storage configuration.

In October 2022 the machine received an addition 32 GB memory upgrade and the GTX 1060 graphics card was replaced with an Asus RTX 3060 Graphics Card. The GTX 1060 card was sold on eBay.
In November 2022 the machine was upgraded to an Intel Core I7-9700K Coffee Lake processor. The replaced Intel core I5-8600K was sold on eBay.

In August 2024 the machine was downgraded back to a GTX 1060 graphics card, replacing the Asus RTX 3060 Graphics card which was put in storage. The GTX 1060 is a more era-appropriate Graphics Card and an ideal match for my monitor's DVI port.

In October 2024 the machine was upgraded to an 8-core AMD Ryzen 7 9700X running with 96GB RAM on the X870 platform, restoring the Asus RTX 3060 graphics card to active duty. The replaced components were put to use in eventide.
